TikTok is racing against time to develop a "US version" TikTok faces plans to ban its activities after entering the US with legislation, the company is reportedly working on a separate algorithm for its 170 million US users that will operate independently of its Chinese parent ByteDance.
Once the video app's code is cracked, it will be better adapted to American audiences and congressional laws.
According to Reuters, in recent months, hundreds of ByteDance and TikTok developers in China and the US have been instructed to comb through millions of lines of code to use the company's algorithms to find videos that match customers' tastes.
The engineers' goal is to remove all Chinese user data and develop their own code base independent of the system used by ByteDance's Chinese version of TikTok, known as Douyin.
Once complete, TikTok US will operate and maintain its recommendation algorithm independently from other regional TikTok apps and its Chinese counterpart, Douyin.
The move reportedly means TikTok US may no longer be able to offer the same scale of content because it relies heavily on China-based ByteDance engineers.
